“BECAUSE I CARE” GIFTS

Kijiji Cha Upendo (Village of Love) Children’s Project is so called because it begins with LOVE. This is what 140 big-hearted women in Kibera give to orphaned and vulnerable children. But their means are very meagre. And because WE care that children should have not only love, but also shelter, food and education, we empower the women to provide these necessities, proudly through their own enterprise. Thank you for showing that YOU care!

WHAT WILL YOUR DOLLARS DO? See the possibilities below! Make your gift here: DONATE

$35. Climate Change Resilience- URBAN FARMING KIT: The gift of better nutrition. Growing children need nutritious food. But, with massive price increases due to climate change events, the purchase of fresh vegetables is slipping beyond the reach of many families in informal settlements like Kibera. Despite living in densely populated urban environment, Sara is able to grow vegetables herself – in containers. Your $35 gift will provide a woman with the basics: soil, seeds, plant food, containers; tools and training.

$50. FAMILY FOOD SHARE: The gift of food security. There is no laughter when children are hungry. The stress on Mary is huge, trying to keep her children fed and happy when her small business is failing due to COVID. Your gift of $50 purchases a 90kg bag of maize meal to help stave off hunger for families like Mary’s. Maize meal (ugali) is the staple food that fills children’s stomachs. Your gift will supplement the women’s efforts o generate income by providing this basic staple food, so no child will sleep hungry.

$800. BOOST A WOMAN’S SMALL BUSINESS: The gift of self -sufficiency. Phanis supports 6 children. Through her small kiosk she generates enough income to pay rent and purchase nutritious food. But payment of school fees is always a challenge. In 2022, with your help, Phanis and 9 other women will receive $800 each to invest in their small businesses so they can become independent of Village of Love school fee supplements. This investment along with additional small business management training will allow these women to proudly provide for all their families’ needs

$70. COVID HANDWASHING STATION: The gift of safety. Under the constant threat of COVID, a million+ people living in very close proximity in Kibera depend on organisations like Village of Love to provide clean water, soap and instruction on COVID safety. Village of Love has taught Jennifer how to make her own soap and how to keep her family and customers safe through handwashing, sanitising surfaces, and mask wearing. Your gift of $70 can reach many more Kibera residents with basic COVID knowledge and the means to be safe. You can save lives!

$80. PRIMARY SCHOOL FOR AN ORPHANED CHILD: The chance of a lifetime.Barrack is one of the fortunate children in the informal settlement of Kibera who can attend school. He has a uniform, pencil and notebook. Without school, on the streets of Kibera his future would be very bleak: gangs, drugs, prostitution and crime. Instead he has a chance to gain skills, confidence and self esteem, to begin to dream of becoming someone who can give back to the community. His future is bright! Your gift of $80 will give a vulnerable child like Barrack the chance of a lifetime!

$150. A GIRL’S HIGH SCHOOL FEES for SIX MONTHS: Educate the next generation too. Rasheda (center) dreams of becoming a doctor. Your gift of $150 can help her and other vulnerable girls realise their dreams. If they can continue with school, they will gain skills, confidence and the maturity to make good life decisions, and they may avoid early pregnancy. High School education will lay the groundwork to learn a trade, create their own thriving small business, or maybe even qualify for a scholarship to university. AND your gift can reach even further into the future: it has been shown that an educated girl will likely ensure her own daughters attend school too!
